1987 - Nelson and the volcano

Emmanuel Genvrin

First performed on July 8th 1987 at Saint Denis. Writer and director : Emmanuel Genvrin Music : Jean-Luc Trulès. Sets : Laurent Segelstein.

This play is a children’s version inspired by Run Rock, from which it borrowed the volcano theme, the costumes and certain set elements. It presents the traditional characters of Grand Diab and of Madame Debassyns, famous slave owner. A very funny show that was well acted by Arnaud Dormeuil, however the performances were suspended because at the end Nelson gets drunk to give himself courage. The children loved it, but not the local temperance leagues. It’s true that at the time alcoholism was a real scourge in Reunion. We can’t make fun of everything. (Emmanuel Genvrin)

The play

On the Fournaise volcano tourists bother madame Debassyns. She begs Gran Diab to find her another dwelling-place.

what the press think

"Run Rock has sired another. The public sees with pleasure the popular actors of Vollard theatre again, a company in the exact and strong sense of the word"
