1984 - Torouze

Emmanuel Genvrin

First performed on April 24th 1984 at the Grand Marché, Saint Denis. Written, directed and music by : Emmanuel Genvrin Sets : Déborah Roubane and Pierre-Louis Rivière

"At Etang Salé I’d heard the following story : a "Creole lady" who was sleeping with her chauffeur, and who was murdered by her children. Witnesses had mysteriously died. Family dramas and curses are widespread on Reunion, and witchcraft is a real scourge. There was a sedan chair, a grandma Kal, a Malabar ’Jako’ (on stage for the first time in Reunion) and large frescos painted in the style of Douanier Rousseau. Arnaud Dormeuil, who had a small role as the chauffeur of the red car, stole the show. It was to happen often !" [E. Genvrin]

The play

On an overseas island, at the start of the automobile era, two sons murder their mother using witchcraft and tropical mythology.

what the press think

"Torouze has that marvellous taste of childhood, when we listened to bedtime stories about Grandma Kal."
Brigitte Fontaine [Visu]

"It must be said that this young company […] knows how to create, to adapt a repertoire from Reunion’s depths, and renew itself »
[Témoignages newspaper]

"How difficult to resist the enthusiasm of this young company from Reunion Island. A colourful and good-natured show, ending in a enthusiastic atmosphere. Very accomplished, these multi-talented people ! The company attains a level of gaiety and colour rarely equalled. This is a topsy-turvy theatre, generous and tender."
[Le Quotidien du Médecin]

"Everything is very well conducted, intelligently constructed. The staging is interesting, and as for the actors their energy is communicative."
